Engagement ring trends of 2023

Just like fashion, architectural or media trends are constantly changing, so are jewellery trends. I was asked by The Ballito Magazine to share my thoughts on what I thought 2023 would bring and this is a snippet of what I said:

On general trends:

I have seen a big shift towards the less traditional gem choices. Of course diamonds will always be special (they haven’t got their good rep for no reason) but coloured and unique gems have grown and continue to do so. And I am loving it. There are so many beautiful options to choose from.

On metal preferences:

  • Think of what metals you usually wear. Most of us don’t often wear mixed metals, so sticking to what you think works for you is usually your best bet.

  • If you have the budget for it, try to avoid using sterling silver. I LOVE silver. It’s the perfect affordable metal that is perfect for everyday wear. BUT it does tend to lose shine and can get damaged a little quicker than gold or platinum.

On the perfect extravagant ring:

If you want to make a statement with your ring, Moissanites (so much sparkle) and bigger coloured gems are the way to go. Adding in multiple gems as well as antique elements in metal is the perfect way to add some extravagance to your engagement ring.

Secret Borrow

Engagement Ring Metal Guide

9CT gold

More affordable and slightly harder, making it more resistant to scratches. A great everyday option.

18CT gold

Richer colour and higher purity (75% gold), giving it a more luxurious feel. Slightly softer but more prestigious.

Yellow gold

The classic, warm tone. Timeless and traditional.

Rose gold

A Romantic, warm pink tone created by mixing gold with copper. Flattering on most skin tones.

White gold

A cool, silvery tone created by mixing gold with white metals and plated with rhodium for a bright finish. Requires replating every few years.

Platinum

The most durable and hypoallergenic option. Heavier than gold with a cool, bright finish. The most premium choice.

Sterling silver

The most affordable option, best suited to fashion pieces rather than everyday fine jewellery as it tarnishes over time.
